When Loving Him Hurts by Sue Hickey & Phillipa Sklaar

When Loving Him Hurts – a unique guidebook that takes you through the complex web of domestic abuse, avoiding victim-based myths and showing women just how to take back their power.

Ask any woman whether a man has ever hurt her, and the answer in all probability will be a resounding Yes. Yet despite women’s abuse being one of the most topical and written about subjects today, there are still many myths and preconceptions surrounding the subject.

When Loving Him Hurts breaks open victim-based myths on domestic abuse, helping the reader to identify and accept her situation of abuse and subsequently empower her to learn the art of the sacred No, reclaiming self-esteem and healing through life-changing, creative expression.

With real life stories from well known psychotherapist Sue Hickey’s patients, the book profiles the abused woman as well as the men who abuse them, the abuser, revealing how a woman could possibly find herself in an abusive relationship as well as how the abuser doesn’t necessarily understand what he is doing and more often than not he is living semi-consciously.

Written specifically for wounded women, by two women who are all too familiar with the silent and invisible stain of abuse that marks the world we live in, this unique guide discusses how women can begin to heal themselves by examining their own answers and developing their own understanding of the abusive pattern, also developing the skills required to manage oneself in a relationship and beginning the journey of healing.

About the Authors

Sue Hickey is a well-known and respected Johannesburg-based therapist who has been in private practice for over twenty-five years. She has worked with and achieved astounding results in hundreds of women’s lives who, desperately unhappy in their relationships due to varying degrees of abuse, sought help from her. Due to the overwhelming demand, Sue started a support group for women in abusive relationships and worked with co-author Philippa Sklaar as a patient and survivor of abuse.

The lessons learnt from the women in group therapy over the years give depth and context to the content in When Loving Him Hurts.

Phillipa Sklaar has been in three abusive marriages. In When Loving Him Hurts, she bravely describes the pain and shame she experienced in her relationships as well as her long road to healing. “Sue invited me to assist her in the writing of this book to share my experiences. Like the recovering alcoholic who is prepared to disclose her story, I believe that my healing comes through sharing mine.”

Bully-Proof by Gail Dore

Every day, thousands of South African children go to school filled with terror because they know they’re going to be bullied. Children who are targeted by bullies are at enormous risk, yet many parents don’t know why it is happening to their child, or what to do about it.

Bully-proof looks at every aspect of bullying, from name-calling, taunting and rumour-mongering to physical assault, and examines why and how bullies behave the way they do, and what can be done to help them and their victims. The more we understand bullying behaviour, the better we can address the underlying causes and put effective controls in place.

Studies have shown that the ‘whole school’ approach, involving pupils, teachers and parents, is by far the most effective method of reducing incidents of bullying, as well as limiting the potential for future incidents. Implementing an effective anti-bullying campaign is not just about changing the behaviour of a few maladjusted children; it is about changing the philosophy of the entire school. Using a step-by-step approach, this book provides educators, parents, counsellors and children with the tools they need to develop a successful anti-bullying programme.

About the Author

Gail Dore, a life skills trainer and family counsellor, has over a decade of experience in bullying amongst children of school-going age. A former drama teacher, who used stage work as a means of promoting children’s self-confidence and communication skills, Gail became aware that some of the children in her drama classes were affected by incidents of bullying at school. She began an in-depth study of the phenomenon, which culminated in the development of an anti-bullying campaign aimed at the whole school, not just individual children. A pilot programme at five Gauteng schools proved to be a resounding success and Gail continues to advocate for her anti-bullying campaign to be adopted throughout the country.

That Sugar Book by Damon Gameau

The illustrated tie-in book to the health documentary That Sugar Film, an explosive expose of the dangers of hidden sugar in our food.

In the health documentary That Sugar Film, writer and director Damon Gameau enlists the help of Stephen Fry, Hugh Jackman and leading scientists around the world to shine a light on the terrible effects of sugar. In a Supersize Me-style experiment, he changes his diet to include 40 teaspoons of sugar a day for 60 days – the average daily sugar intake in Australia – and monitors the effect on his body. But here is the catch – he cannot eat chocolate, sweets, ice cream or cake; the sugar must come from ‘healthy’ foods.

In this illustrated That Sugar Book, Damon explains how sugar damages our bodies and our minds, and how easy it is to consume sugar without even knowing it. Revealing the astonishing amounts of sugar hidden in supposedly healthy foods on supermarket shelves – such as low-fat yoghurt, muesli and children’s fruit snacks – Damon makes us realise the damage we unknowingly do to ourselves and our families when we make poor food choices, and shows us how to make it right.

With an up-close account of Damon’s sugar experiment, and sugar-free recipes to help you wean off the white stuff, That Sugar Book is a startling wake-up call to those of us who have never questioned what’s really in our food.

About the Author

Damon Gameau is an award-winning actor and 2011 Tropfest winner, as well as a passionate advocate for good health and a warrior against the food industry that is making us fat and sick. He is the writer and director of That Sugar Film.
